Pemphigus Symptoms
Providing Patient Care In The San Francisco
Bay Area Since 1996
Pemphigus is an autoimmune, mucocutaneous condition which causes ulceration of the oral mucosa and can cause significant oral discomfort.
Many cases start in the mouth and eventually involve the skin. If left untreated, this condition can be fatal. Early diagnosis is important. Definitive diagnosis is by biopsy with routine histopathological examination and direct immunofloresence testing of the tissue specimens. Dr. Nita Chainani-Wu has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of pemphigus vulgaris. Management involves a team approach with the patient’s dermatologist and other health care providers. In addition to the systemic immunosuppressants necessary in the treatment of pemphigus, topical medications can help in management of the oral symptoms caused by pemphigus.
